Kurt Cobain wears Daniel Johnston T-Shirt to VMAs

Kurt Cobain wears Daniel Johnston T-Shirt to VMAs The Date: September 9, 1992
The Event: Kurt Cobain wears a Daniel Johnston t-shirt to the MTV VMAs
The Result: Thousands discover one of underground music's most underground oddballs

Back in 1992, what t-shirt you wore really mattered. That's the lesson we're to take if we're to study in one of alternative music's most beloved anecdotes. Few people remember much from the MTV Video Music Awards from 1992. That Van Halen's yet-to-be-appropriated-by-the-Republican-Party anthem "Right Now" cleaned up the major gongs is a fact that no one's bothered to etch into lore.

But the devoted fans of radical, underground acts have long memories, and the most mythological moment from the 1992 awards may not have been Nirvana urging to play "Rape Me" rather than their hit, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It may have been what Kurt Cobain had on.

Cobain considered himself an unabashed lover of "pure underground music," and went out of his way to champion brilliant yet unheard-of acts like The Vaselines, The Raincoats, Os Mutantes, and Young Marble Giants. For these VMAs, Cobain chose to publicly declare his love for Daniel Johnston, momentarily sending Johnston into a bright public spotlight.

In 1992, in a pre-internet era, the ability to find out about fringe acts was limited to what your local record-store was like. Information was a limited commodity, and wearing someone's t-shirt made a statement long before last.fm profiles did the work for you. In this day and age, when the internet offers the possibility of everyone being an obscure music expert, there's no comparable act; if Jack White had worn an Ariel Pink t-shirt to the 2005 MTV VMAs, no one would've batted an eyelid.

Courtney Love Elle UK January 2009: “I Set The Stage For Britney Spears”

Courtney Love photographed for Elle UK Magazine January 09.
Courtney Love has claimed that the meltdown she suffered after the 1994 suicide of husband Kurt Cobain laid a path for Britney Spears’ nervous breakdown years later.
“I had a long, hard fall. I set the stage for Britney to crash and burn. I went through it all first,” the Hole singer says in the January 2009 issue of British Elle.

Even in His Youth

When rock star Kurt Cobain took his life in 1994, many fans blamed the death on fame itself. His cousin, a registered nurse devoted to youth suicide prevention, believes it had more to do with his history of depression, and offers advice for helping other troubled young people.

By Brian Libby

In 1994, Kurt Cobain took his life at the age of 27. Like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and other rock stars who died young before him, Cobain has achieved a youthful immortality in which his memory endures as symbol more than man. As the reluctant poster child for Seattle's early-'90s grunge rock explosion, Cobain never adjusted to his enormous fame as leader of the band Nirvana. His suicide is often attributed to his unhappiness at having gone from proud indie rock rebel to mainstream superstar.
But no one's life is quite that simple. To cite Cobain's unwanted superstardom as the primary cause of his suicide ignores the fact that Cobain battled mental illness for most of his life.
When Kurt Cobain took his life in 1994 -- the third member of the Cobain family to do so -- it was a wake-up call for his cousin. Beverly Cobain, a registered nurse who already had 15 years of experience as a mental health professional by then, rededicated her life to teaching and crusading for suicide prevention. Because she had battled depression as a teen, and because it's a leading cause of death in that age group, she chose to focus on adolescent suicide. Since then, Beverly Cobain has authored the acclaimed book When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens, has spoken around the country about suicide prevention, and has been honored by numerous mental health and youth organizations for her efforts.
Having conquered her own demons, she quietly spends her days doing the patient work that matters to her most, stepping into the spotlight only as needed. To that end, if you think Beverly Cobain is using her cousin's death to promote her own work, you're right -- and there may be no better tribute.
She talks about it:
You were a registered nurse and mental health practitioner long before Kurt's death. How did that play a role in your work?
When Kurt killed himself, I really began to look specifically at the significance of suicide: the causes, and the horrifying prevalence of young people choosing to take their own lives. I began speaking about teen suicide to communities around the U.S. shortly afterward. Most of the training involved clinicians and professionals within the mental health field, but I felt I wasn't reaching the front lines in the battle to save kids from themselves. The focus of suicide prevention needs to be with teachers, parents, counselors, librarians, pediatricians, brothers, sisters, friends -- the people in key roles to spot kids in pain.
How high is the suicide rate for teens compared to other age groups?
The highest rate of suicide in the United States is among elderly men. However, suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds. If we are as poor at reporting teen suicides as we are with other suicides, it may be the leading cause of death for that age group.
Can you tell me more about Kurt in the context of the Cobain family?
The first two suicides were also Cobain males, m

Kurt Cobain
February 27, 1967 – April 5, 1994

Member of the 27 Club
Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana were unleashed in 1989 and many say they, along with Pearl Jam, almost single-handedly changed what the world then knew as rock music. They created a dirty, flannel and jean-wearing beautiful mess that combined equal parts punk, metal, alternative rock, disillusionment and apathy. It would become know as “grunge” and dealt a fatal blow to “hair metal,” the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the last days of disco. Cobain formed Nirvana with Krist Novoselic in 1987. They were signed to Sub Pop Records who released their debut,  Bleach in 1989. Their drummer at the time was Chad Channing but he was soon replaced by Dave Grohl whose pounding assault was exactly what the band needed to take their message beyond the dimly lit clubs of Seattle. Two years later, the band released their amazing Nevermind album which included the radio and video hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a song so revered that it even earned a parody from Weird Al Yankovic.  While all this was going on, Cobain met and fell in love with Courtney Love of the band, Hole. They were wed on February 24, 1992 and had their first and only child later that year. Cobain appeared to be in a very happy place even though many Nirvana fans resented his relationship with Love, some comparing her to Yoko Ono and her perceived role in breaking up the Beatles. Needless to say, Cobain continued to struggle with his own internal demons (both mental and physical) in spite of, or perhaps because of all the “positive” changes in his life. His drug problems are already well documented, so need to go into them here.   On March 1, 1994 while on tour in Munich, Love woke up one morning to find Cobain had overdosed on champagne and Rohypnol. Love later declared that this was Cobain’s first attempt at suicide. After apparent struggles (he claimed he was fine) back home in Seattle, Cobain agreed to go to to rehab in Los Angeles. He checked in on March 30th, but just one day later, he hopped the fence and took a plane back home to Seattle. Over the next couple of days there were various Cobain sitings in Seattle clubs, but his family had no idea where he was. Love reached out to a private detective to help find him. On April 8th, Cobain was found dead.  The police ruled his death a suicide by shotgun wound. The date of death was declared to be April 5, 1994

Are Beats by Dr.Dre Headphones Amazing?

I recently met a gentleman walking around the mall wearing Monster Beats By Dr. Dre Studio headphones  and could not resist the urge to ask him how they sounded. He was kind enough to let me have quick listen to his Beats headphones and to say I was impressed would be quite an understatement. Checking out the sound and experiencing them for myself made me want to write this Beats By Dr. Dre Review, so I hope if helps those looking for a little more information on them. The Monster Beats is somewhat on the high-end variety. It is sold at about $350 or more, but now, you may purchase it at $159 on beatsbydreseller.com.

From the look, feel, design, and most importantly, the superb sound quality, it is apparent that Monster and Dr. Dre and their teams have put together a classic line of high-quality headphones aimed toward music lovers and hip hop fanatics, specifically. The official statement is that these headphones have taken over three years of research and development before they were released to the public.

This is obvious once you hear what come through these Beats noise cancelling headphones. The bass sounds are rich and full, the mid levels and vocals are clear, clean and sharp, and the highs are crisp and separate without ever distorting or sounding tinny.

But this Beats by Dr. Dre line is not without any faults, i have to admit. There have been many reports of the plastic cracking, and you absolutely have to remember to turn them off when you're finished listening to them or you'll spend a ton of money on batteries.

The main competitor brands of the Beats By Dre headphones are industry leaders such as Bose and Sennheiser, so you know these bad boys have really been put through a lot of testing and development to match the criteria. I honestly couldn't see Dr. Dre putting his name on a studio product that wouldn't live up to his own high quality standards.

But like I said above, these headphones are not all perfect. With the upcoming release of the Monster Beats Pro series many of the issues that people have with the lower end models have been addressed and taken care of.

The Monster Beats Dr. Dre Headphones  is a true music-lover's treasure as it promises to give you what every headphone in the market should be giving but only few can remarkably pull off: to let you hear music the way you should.
