The vote against the Cobain rename drew applause from the audience at Wednesday's council meeting.
Some people were concerned about memorializing the grunge rock musician because of his drug use, suicide and negative comments about his hometown.
In July 2009, a monument to the rockstar was mounted on the bridge.
It included the somewhat controversial quote: '...Drugs are bad for you. They will f*** you up.'... sans stars.
The city decided to sandblast the expletive so the 'uck' were erased but fans have since come in their droves to chisel it back in.

And the bridge has become a popular place for fans to come pay tribute to the alternative-rock icon.
The star wrote about the bridge in the song 'Something in the Way.'
Kurt has close ties to the bridges in his hometown, having occasionally stayed under the Sixth Street bridge when he was homeless at age 18.
The council did vote to name a small body of land on the Wishkah River the Cobain Landing.
