It’s Been A While, Hasn’t It?

Hey everyone… As you can tell by the date on my last post as compared to this one, I was away for a LONG time. The truth is there is no excuse. I was on vacation and feeling just as lazy as Bruno Mars laying on his bed. I can assure you that I will more than make up for this, as I have a few surprises in store for all my regular readers and plenty of new music to discuss!
Let’s get right down to business with the much focused on topic of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way.

This is her second studio album and was met with many different reactions both good and bad. The album, as far as I can tell, is about sexuality, individuality, freedom and choice; all of which Lady Gaga is already a symbol of. The album’s strength lies in its variation of songs. From the raunchy ‘Judas’ to the heart-lifting ‘Edge of Glory’ and the gloriously dark ‘Heavy Metal Lover’ [which happens to be my favorite track on the album], Born This Way manages to appeal to a lot of different types of people. Gaga seems to be using the album as a megaphone to shout out to all her fans that its okay to have your own opinion and personality and to be afraid.

Lady Gaga tells her fans “there is nothing trendy about Born This Way. This connection that we all share is something so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or an outfit, or a fucking meat dress. [...] Born This Way is about what keeps us up at night and what makes us afraid.”

What Makes You Wanna Die?

So I’ll admit it. I’ve actually been seeing pictures of Taylor Momsen all over the internet before I even guessed she was a musician. [I'm not a follower of Gossip Girl.  At all.] Incredibly gorgeous, long-legged and blonde, she came across as more of a goth model of sorts and it wasn’t until I saw a photo of her kissing a microphone did I realize ‘Hey, this one’s a musician!’. Then I Googled her. Needless to say I was pretty impressed when I heard the music.

So this girl’s got an amazing voice. She’s got this deep, sexy voice that could seduce a dead man to walk out of his grave and worship her for eternity. She’s a part of the band The Pretty Reckless, and their sound is a creative mix of Alternative rock and Grunge, which definitely reminds me of Nirvana. Blonde and with a voice to match the depth Cobain’s had, Momsen seems to be making it her personal goal to be the next female Kurt Cobain of today’s music scene.

Their first single ‘Make Me Wanna Die’ from their debut album Light Me Up has revived grunge to a level where people are actually going back and listening to Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam to relive the heydays of the genre. It definitely made me rediscover Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ because of Momsen channeling Kurt Cobain in her very bones. ‘Make Me Wanna Die’ has anger, desperation, resentment and a sense of manic obsession towards the subject of the song, all spelled out with ferocious beats and heavy distortion on the guitars, accompanied by bass to die for. Momsen belts out the lyrics with the control of a young Amy Lee, and while I may not love her as much as I love Amy, I can definitely give her some kudos for her vocal skills.
There is however one thing that I absolutely CANNOT stand about Momsen. Are you ready to hear it? Here goes: She constantly wears/performs in lingerie. Now while some might say it’s sexy, it does absolutely nothing for me. Especially not while she takes her top off in front of thousands of fans in a concert. I’m not usually a prude -As you all know, Lady Gaga is my icon and there are moments of nudity and lingerie there as well- but maybe what irks me about Momsen stripping has  to do with the fact that she’s younger than I would have expected someone who takes their clothes off in public to be. She’s younger than me, and at the time of flashing said audience, she was only seventeen. However we don’t really have control over her wardrobe selections, so I’ll just have to let that one go.

All said and done, The Pretty Reckless are quite impressive when it comes to making music and reviving forgotten legends in today’s auto-tuned, dance-number-dominated world. They are widely accepted among people around the ages of sixteen and above, and a screaming success with dominating the UK rock charts at number one. Their music has impressed me more than I’d like to admit and while they are not a favorite of mine, ‘Make Me Wanna Die’ has seen a considerable amount of replays on mypersonal playlist. They have been labelled as ‘inspirational’, ‘expressive’ and ‘hardcore’; all of which I agree completely with. Now if only Momsen would put some clothes on…

Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar Review

Come on people now! Smile on your brother. Everybody get together. Try to love on another right now! To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of Nirvana’s Nevermind, Fender presents a reissue version of the guitar bought by Kurt Cobain a short time before the recording of this album.
A collector lent the original guitar to Fender, who then decided to manufacture it in Mexico. Before its launch, Kurt Cobain’s Jaguar got a lot of people talking, especially due to the possible incompatibility between the “grunge spirit” and the signature and relic guitars trend. So… is this guitar a real instrument or a shameful business idea using the name of one of the most popular lefty rock icons.

Some History…

Fender Jaguar Kurt Cobain
Originally designed for surf musicians, the Fender Jaguar was introduced as the leading product of Fender’s electric guitar range in the 60′s. The guitar had two independent electrical circuits: a lead stage with volume and tone controls plus three switches (two switches for pickup on/off plus a low-cut filter to create a very sharp sound). Accessible via a switch on the left part of the guitar body, the Rhythm stage offered additional control for the neck pickup through the volume and tone knobs. But the Jaguar had little success and disappeared from Fender’s catalog in the 70′s. Even though this guitar had a vintage touch already in the 90′s, the Jaguar (as well as the Jazzmaster and Mustang) was still rather inexpensive then. But after the grunge wave, and especially due to Kurt Cobain, its price went up and Fender relaunched production. The famous Jagstang — an hybrid between the Jaguar and a Mustang (Cobain loved it), that was actually developed by Fender and Kurt himself — also comes to mind. But the musician wouldn’t have too much time to enjoy this honor and decided to take his life some time after receiving the first prototypes.
Now let’s take a closer look…

Rate Me

Without having the same magic as an original ’62 Jaguar (which would cost about $3,000 with custom pickups/electronics…), this Kurt Cobain signature is a very good guitar. Reliable, strong personality, beautiful, noisy, wild. The guitar is rather versatile but it is not made for guitar heroes regardless of music genre (jazz, blues, metal). This guitar will be the ideal partner for sound destroyers in music genres like pop, alternative, rock, post rock, etc. And of course, a lefty version is also available!

Wearing Kurt & Courtney's Love

Wearing Kurt & Courtney's Love

The love we have for Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love is private and special and hard to put into words, usually involving hours spent watching YouTube videos of the two of them. But if you’re not that insane and prefer to wear your alt-nation love on your sleeve, Japanese brand TAKAHIROMIYASHITA TheSoloist and Japanese magazine Spade have teamed up for a capsule collection printed with black and white photos of the pair. There’s sixteen pieces in total, which, can be purchased here. Its a great idea and I love it.

Courtney Love went off on a rant last night during her performance with Hole at the SWU Festival in Brazil. In addition to claiming that she has license to use the word "fags" thanks to her supposed status as a "gay icon," requesting a Chapstick for a herpes sore and insisting that she was the inspiration for the Smashing Pumpkins' hit albums Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the singer launched into a tirade about Dave Grohl after spotting a fan carrying a photo of her late husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

"I don't need to see a picture of Kurt, asshole, and I'm going to have you fucking removed if you keep throwing that up," she said to the audience member. "I'm not Kurt – I have to live with his shit, his ghost, his kid every day. Throwing that up is stupid and rude and I'll beat the fuck out of you if you do it again."

"Go see the fucking Foo Fighters and do that shit," Love said before storming off the stage. She returned a few minutes later after her guitarist, Micko Larson, led the audience in a chant of "the Foo Fighters are gay." Before beginning their encore, Love told the crowd "I don't care what you listen to at home, but if a guy takes money off my kid's table, fuck him."

You can watch Love's response to seeing the Cobain poster in the video below.

Clothing featuring Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love surfaces in Japan Read more at ONTD: http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/66104046.html#ixzz1kw0PJv3G

Clothing featuring late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love has emerged in Japan.

The three-part collaboration between retailer Eyescream, Spade Magazine and Number (N)ine designer Takahiro Miyashita, features 16 "extremely limited" pieces of clothing printed with images of the couple, according to the Eyescream website.

The haul, includes t-shirts, trousers and jackets. The collection also includes a rare Pearl Jam t-shirt.

Meanwhile, Love recently won her legal dispute with her landlady over her New York home. The Hole star will not be forced to move out after a judge refuted claims from property owner Donna Lyons that the rocker hadn't paid her rent.

Lyons had previously claimed that Love owed over $50,000 (£32,000) in rent, but according to the court judgement, the pair had agreed a new payment schedule after Love moved in.

The singer had been making her rent payments according to the new agreement, while Lyons was said to be trying to enforce the original deal.

Love is reportedly working on her own memoir. It is thought that the book will "set the record straight" about her marriage to Nirvana late frontman Kurt Cobain, her career as a rock star and actress, and her relationships with other celebrities and her daughter, Frances Bean.

Kurt Cobain Dead

Kurt Cobain was a musician, songwriter and artist. His claim to fame was being the vocalist of the band Nirvana.

Cobain was known for writing songs about gender equality and the end of racism and homophobia. While his chosen genre is alternative music, his message touches all.

His songs "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come As You Are" are still being played on the radio to this day. Kurt Cobain is listed as the 12th greatest guitarist of all time by the Rolling Stones Magazine.

Like many other brilliant musicians, Cobain was persecuted throughout his career. His vocal support for black people and homosexuals made him the target of white conservatives.

It didn't help that he was fighting a losing war with drugs and depression.

Cobain was suicidal. He checked in and out of rehab during the last days of his life, but in the end, death won over. He was found lifeless at his Washington Lake Home with a bullet in his head. He died at the age of 27.

Kurt Cobain | ART

Nirvana's front man is probably the greatest inspiration for most of us. Although known mostly for his musical accomplishment, he was also a gifted visual artist. His better known works are the numerous record covers that he has designed for his band Nirvana, but beyond those, he also created a vast amount of paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages and sound/video montages.

Daisy Eagan of Love, Loss and What I Wore on Big Feet and Baggy Pants

Daisy Eagan in 'Love, Loss and What I Wore'

About the Show

Poster
Me and Kurt Cobain, man. No one understood our pain.
About the Author:
Tony winner Daisy Eagan first made a splash on Broadway as Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden. At age 11, she took home a 1991 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress, making her the youngest female winner of the coveted award. Eagan went on to appear on Broadway in Les Misérables and James Joyce’s The Dead, and now she’s dishing about relationships and fashion off-Broadway in Love, Loss and What I Wore. Eagan will hit the road with the first national tour of Love, Loss starting January 3. Below, the actress sheds some light on her own fashion choices, her love for ‘90s music, and the reason she’ll be the coolest grandma in New York City.

If Adidas ever stops making their shell-toe sneakers, I'll be in big trouble. I've been wearing them since high school. I'll wear them till I die. I'll be a little old lady wearing black shell-toe Adidas. I'll be hobbled and crippled, but by God, I'll be the coolest little old lady ever. Just don't tell my podiatrist. About a year ago, I went to him complaining of pain in both my big toes.

"How often do you wear these?" he asked, literally folding my sneaker in half like a ballet slipper.

"Every day?"

"Not anymore, you don't."

I'm supposed to wear a sneaker with solid ankle support. One that won’t bend in half like a piece of taffy. I have freakishly flexible ankles and flat feet. Wearing my Adidas is just as good as going barefoot. But the thing is, I have huge feet. I'm 5'1'' and I wear a 7 1/2 shoe. So, the more stuff there is to my shoe, the more gargantuan my feet look.

Growing up in New York City, I rode the subway and went to school with Puerto Rican girls with cute, little feet. They wore whatever sneaker they wanted and their feet always looked tiny and good. I was so jealous. When I first learned about foot-binding I didn't get why people were so opposed to it. You mean my parents could have stunted my foot growth and I could have tiny, dainty feet?? They'd be all deformed? Who cares! I could finally wear the same sneakers as Marisol and Vanessa!

Most people I know do not wear the same style shoe they were wearing 15 years ago (Except my dad. He also wears Adidas. Countries, white with green stripes. And yes, I am slowly becoming my father, but that's a whole different story). But the truth is, most of my style (if you can call it that) hasn't changed since high school. I think this may have something to do with the fact that I keep forgetting I'm not 16 anymore. I recently found myself chatting with a young woman about music. We had similar taste. "We should totally go to some concerts together!" I squealed.

She looked at me funny and then I remembered that she was literally 17 years younger than me. Later, I imagine, she told her friends, "Some creepy old lady with big feet said she wanted to hang out with me." And then they all laugh, high five each other and chug their Zimas.

I have a pair of pants I bought in the boys section of Old Navy when I was 16. They're low-wasted and baggy. While the prominent style in the mid-‘90s was hideous high-waisted pants, some designers, bless them, were doing the low-waisted baggy thing and to this day, it's the style I prefer. I have a rather large caboose for my size (you know what they say. Big feet, big... butt?) and the high-waisted pant ends up making my butt look about four feet long. The low-waisted, baggy pant, on the other hand, suggests the shapeliness of my back side, without making me feel like I have a neon sign on my back saying, "Look at my ass!!" Only recently have my Old Navy pants become too small. I'll fit into them again. Mark my words.

I am also stuck in the mid-'90s musically. When my local rock radio station does their "rock of '90s" specials, I am tempted to cancel all my plans, put on a flannel shirt and brood in front of my radio all weekend.

It's strange that I'm stuck in the mid-'90s. I was miserable in the mid-'90s. I was an angry, depressed teenager with no friends. Maybe that's why I relate so well to the angst rock of that era. Me and Kurt Cobain, man. No one understood our pain.

Now that I think about it, maybe I'm trying to live out that fantasy of going back to your teen years with all the knowledge you have now. Maybe I still wear my Adidas in the hope that someone will mistake me for my 16-year-old self and tease me, and I'll finally be able to rise above it; not let it affect me; hold my head high and walk away. Or, even better, I’ll be able to respond with something so soul crushing, it scars them for life. Maybe I still wear them in an attempt to rewrite my adolescence. Maybe I'm afraid of getting old.

But honestly, I think it's just because they make my feet look cute. They may ruin my feet forever, but good God, when I am a little old lady, hobbling down the street, people will say, "Look at that awesome old lady in her shell toe Adidas!" And I'll pause the Beastie Boys on my iPod (version 7652.4) and say, "You know it."

Christopher Hanke Hearts Darren Criss, Jerry O’Connell Is an Alan Rickman Fanboy & More Lessons of the Week

Christopher Hanke Hearts Darren Criss, Jerry O’Connell Is an Alan Rickman Fanboy & More Lessons of the Week
Jerry O'Connell, Dule Hill and Michael Crawford are among this week's newsmakers.
It’s curtains on another week in theater-land, and here at Broadway.com we’re looking back at what we’ve learned in the last seven days. From Patti LuPone’s memorable boobs to Christopher Hanke’s fickle fandom, there’s always something to surprise you here on the Rialto. Click on below to learn our latest Broadway lessons.

Mandy Patinkin Will Never Forget Meeting Patti LuPone’s Breasts
Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin have been an iconic Broadway pair for decades, but Patinkin still remembers their first meeting vividly. “The first time I saw Patti she was in a show called School for Scandal,” he told Broadway.com. “She had a big beauty mark on her face and the most extraordinary breasts.” LuPone’s explanation that her costume had “a restoration [comedy] shelf” didn’t matter. “I didn’t care why, I was grateful for the shelf. I wanted to put my coffee cup on it.” Probably a good move that you didn’t, Mandy. (Or did you?)

Lily Rabe Got Cozy with Al Pacino and Alan Rickman
She may be young, but actress Lily Rabe has held her own against some of the biggest stars on stage, from Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice and Mercedes Ruehl in The American Plan to her current role in Seminar opposite Alan Rickman. So, which of these all-stars has been the most intimidating? “None of the above!” she told Broadway.com. “They’re all powerful, brilliant people and big, big, big stage presences, but I’ve had cozy relationships with all of them.”

Christopher J. Hanke is Over Daniel Radcliffe (and into Darren Criss)
How to Succeed’s Bud Frump, Christopher J. Hanke, will soon be losing his co-star Daniel Radcliffe, and he’s already found a way to comfort himself, as he revealed in his New Years resolution for Broadway.com. “To stop sending fan mail to Daniel Radcliffe and re-purpose that "enthusiasm" toward daily letters to Darren Criss,” he said. “Wow, I feel better now that I have said that out loud.” You know what they say, Hanke: Admitting you have a problem is the first step.

Dulé Hill Totally Wears a Snuggie
He’s a star of stage and screen, but Stick Fly actor Dulé Hill isn’t above wearing that infamous infomercial favorite, the Snuggie. Hill recently took Broadway.com on a tour of his dressing room, in which he showed off his pineapple-shaped pillow (a pineapple appears in almost every episode of his TV show Psych) as well as his snuggly swag. “What better thing for me to have in my dressing room than my very own Psych Snuggie?” he said. Our only suggestion? A Stick Fly Slanket, duh!

There’s No Wrong Way to Sing “Summertime”
With Porgy and Bess back on Broadway, everyone is humming the showstopping song, “Summertime.” But which version? The Gershwin classic has been covered countless times, and Broadway.com wanted to know: does its brilliance hold up in any genre? The answer is a resounding yes. From ‘60s rock goddess Janis Joplin and jazz chanteuse Billie Holliday to American Idol contestant Fantasia Barrino and even ska band Sublime, the song never fails to wow.

Daisy Eagan Has a Lot in Common with Kurt Cobain
She was the youngest female Tony winner ever when she won her trophy for The Secret Garden at age 11, but that didn’t protect Love, Loss and What I Wore star Daisy Eagan from some days ahead as an angsty teenager. These feelings led to an enduring love for all things mid-‘90s, the actress recently told Broadway.com, including a kinship with the frontman of pioneering grunge band Nirvana. “Me and Kurt Cobain, man. No one understood our pain.” Do you also smell like Teen Spirit, Daisy?
