Forever 21 has the rights to sell their own version of the hand-drawn t-shirt Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain made in tribute to West Coast punk band Flipper, a spokeswoman for the company tells Rolling Stone. After inciting controversy among music fans and temporarily removing the shirt for purchase, the $16.90 item has been relisted on Forever21.com.
In an email, the spokeswoman for Forever 21 wrote: "Our legal department has reviewed the vendor’s licensing information and concluded that that Forever 21 has the permission to sell this shirt." She says the shirt has permission to be sold through Forever 21 by the vendor Worn Free.
The "Flipper" t-shirt is also being sold on Worn Free's own site, where they also contextualize the shirt's lineage, noting the band Flipper's impact on West Coast music, their connection to Nirvana, and the 1992 Saturday Night Live performance in which Cobain made his DIY tribute to the band famous to a new audience.
